Modelling and simulation facilities
The Eagle Nest Natural Lightning Laboratory facilities
The UPC-LRG is spezialiced on real structures survey. This survey focuses on the transient current distribution, potential differences between conducting parts and grounding. Our tests includes building sturbines and more particular wind-turbines, wind-turbine blades and airplanes.
Portable equipment
Impulse current generator up to 30 kA.
Comon mode impulse high voltage probes up to 40 kV
Differential mode impulse high voltage probes.
Impulse current sensors
High voltage function generator up to 5 MHz
Current prove from DC to 15 MHz
Electrical-to-Optical and Optical-to-Electrical converters.
High voltage sweep generators.

LABELEC high voltage lightning laboratory
The UPC-LRG collaborates in testing with the LABELEC laboratoy.
The overview characteristics are:
Impulse voltage generator up to 1.2 MV (Lightning Immpulse, Switching impulse, other).
Impulse current generator up to 125 kA (10/350 us).
Impulse current generator up to 40 kA (8/20 us).
Corrossion facilities.
Finite element models
Electric and magnetic field modelling of 3D complex structures.
Low-frequency modelling
Current distribution and potential diferences for complex estructures.
High-frequency modelling for structuresTDNEC2
Based on NEC2 the UPC-LRG developed a full wave application in order to simulate the time domain transient response of a complex geometry.
This application is the TDNEC2. With TDNEC2 is possible to simulate complex structures like lightning protection mesh, blades of wind-turbines, etc. and obtain electromagnetic fields inside, current distributions and voltage differences.
High-frequency modelling for grounding
Modeling of complex grounding geometries by means of the method of moments. This application allows simulating the transient behavior of grounding obtaining potential and currents.
The Eagle Nest Natural Lightning Laboratory
Our lightning instrumented tower offers a unique facility for lightning current tests for elements such as connection components, carbon reinforced plastic parts and surge protectors.
